DYMON Pickleball Q&A: Kevlar Tech, Tennis Elbow & Brand Origin

Several pickleball paddles are displayed on a light green background with scattered crystals. Visible text includes "HITMAN," "MISS MAYHEM," "KEVLAR," and "DYMON."

Dymon Farrer and Brad Barker love pickleball. As the driving forces behind DYMON Pickleball, they handle everything from pioneering new paddle technologies to growing a passionate community of players on and off the court. JustPaddles sat down with Dymon and Brad to discuss the origin of DYMON, their unique engineering philosophies, and everything in between. Enjoy this deep dive into one of the most exciting rising brands in the industry, and learn how a family necessity turned into a high-performance pickleball paddle breakthrough.

What is the origin story of Dymon, and how did the brand get its start in the pickleball industry?

Dymon Farrer: After years of playing, I started developing paddles out of necessity. My wife, who was struggling with unmanageable tennis elbow, couldn’t find a paddle that would allow her to continue playing pickleball without experiencing pain.

So, I started working with engineers on different materials that would help absorb shock. The result was our first paddle, Mayhem. Almost instantly, my wife’s tennis elbow was alleviated. Word spread around Indiana, and people started asking to buy one. This is when I knew I was onto something and DYMON was born.

What is the story behind the founding team coming together to create Dymon, and what drew you all to the pickleball community?

Dymon Farrer: I officially launched DYMON in 2022, and after two years of developing new pickleball paddles, I decided to bring on Brad Barker as the Director of Marketing. Brad started playing pickleball back in 2009 and was also a tennis pro and coach. He’s now applying his sales and marketing experience, and years on court, to help get players to join Team Dymon.

What pulled me into pickleball initially was my wife and I were looking for something to do together, and we fell in love with the sport. We played for years before I even thought about making a paddle.

Brad Barker: Pickleball pulled me in earlier than most—back in ‘09 is when I started playing a fair amount with friends and other tennis pros. Being around tennis for so long naturally gravitated me toward pickleball, and it’s been fun, and interesting, to see how the game has evolved over the last 16 years.

What sets Dymon apart from other paddle companies in the market today? What is the brand's core philosophy?

Dymon Farrer: What sets us apart from other companies is simple: we stand behind our paddles. We’ve heard too many horror stories of other pickleball companies not standing behind theirs, and that’s simply unacceptable. Also, we sell a $300 paddle for $199, and it comes with a 6-month warranty. In the rare event of an issue, customers and dealers typically will interact directly with either myself or Brad.

Brad Barker: Our core philosophy is to make people happy, whether we’re providing a paddle that allows someone with arm issues to play again, putting a paddle in a child’s hand, or upgrading a player to take on the pro tour! We have a paddle for every single player that steps on the court, and we’re just excited to be a small part of their journey.

Another way DYMON sets itself apart from other companies from a marketing perspective—we don’t waste money on influencers. Instead, we focus our budget on engineering better paddles at a better price point.

Dymon Farrer: And, not to sound cliché, but we truly care about our players. Whether that be our recreational club players, kids in Dymon kid’s camps, or our Team Dymon tour pros Paul Davis & Bob Rosene, we want them to be happy and have fun on the pickleball court!

As a brand deeply rooted in the sport, what is Dymon’s number one tip for players who are just getting started in pickleball?

Dymon Farrer: Simply to get out and play routinely! Pickleball is easy to learn, a great way to socialize, and gets you moving. Just be sure to stretch!

For younger players, grab a paddle, and a few friends, and just have some fun. If you find that you like it, connect with a local teaching pro and elevate your game to the next level! Kid’s camps are starting to pop up everywhere, so get in on the action and smash some winners.

Looking ahead, where does Dymon see the sport of pickleball evolving over the next five years, and how does the brand plan to grow with it?

Dymon Farrer: We believe pickleball will experience another massive growth phase once high school and collegiate levels fully implement programs. This will up the competition, pulling in athletes at a younger age, while also incentivizing them with scholarships and NIL money. The game will "age down," so to speak, bringing players into a great lifelong sport.

Once teams are established at the school level, we see pickleball following a similar trajectory as tennis. But since pickleball is easier to play and court supply is growing, more students will give it a try and potentially stick with it longer.

As for paddle technology, DYMON will evolve as rapidly as the pickleball game evolves. We are constantly researching and testing new materials to develop our future paddles!

If you had to pick one signature feature, what is the most unique aspect of a Dymon paddle?

Dymon Farrer: Our Kevlar cores really do make us stand out from the competition, acting as a four-headed Hydra:

  • Shock Absorption: The absorption from Kevlar helps cut wrist, elbow, and shoulder shock, which is a game-changer for many players who have been dealing with pain.
  • Power & Pop: It grants fantastic speed and massive topspin potential.
  • Durability: Our Kevlar holds up longer than other types of materials on the market, and we use the highest grade available to the public.
  • All-Over Sweet Spot: To top it off, our Kevlar grants players an expanded sweet spot that you don’t get from other brands! A quadruple threat from one signature feature.

If Dymon could sign one influential athlete from outside the pickleball world to represent the brand, who would it be and why?

Dymon Farrer: Roger Federer. Having earned the title as one of the best tennis players ever, he holds himself to prestigious standards at all times. That is something Dymon tries to model with every paddle we design and sell, and also with every player we interact with.

When you’re passionate about something, it resonates into everyone involved, bringing everyone up with you. Roger has inspired many people to be better on and off the court, which is something we strive to accomplish as we grow DYMON.

Can you take us behind the scenes and describe how Dymon paddles are engineered and manufactured?

Dymon Farrer: Sure, no problem! This is where the convo gets a bit detailed. Our paddles are thermoformed at the factory and tested to make sure they conform to USA Pickleball (USAPA) approved specifications.

Thermoforming is the process of putting the paddle into a mold and heating the mold to approximately 180°C (350°F), allowing the adhesives to set up properly. Kevlar has an incredibly high melting point of approximately 450°C (850°F), which eliminates any issue of core crushing or "hot spots" that commonly occur in standard polypropylene paddles where the melting point sits much lower at around 165°C (330°F). The result grants that cohesive, all-over sweet spot effect!

Where does the Dymon design team draw inspiration from when developing new paddles? Do you look at outside industries when researching new materials or technologies?

Dymon Farrer: Our paddles are designed in Goshen, Indiana, which is the RV capital of the world. Many lightweight and durable materials are constantly being developed in this area with the goal to build lightweight yet durable campers. We’ve drawn inspiration, and technical experience, directly from those similar materials to build pickleball paddles.

Brad Barker: On the design side, we like to be unique. Creativity stems from everywhere—whether it's colors from a vintage tennis racket or even comic books, we bring in our other passions and try to apply them to our designs. Clothes can be exciting, crazy, and cute... why not paddles?
