Electrum Model E Review

In recent years, the rise in popularity of elongated pickleball paddles has been significant. Every brand not only has an elongated paddle, but most are finding that the elongated paddles are now their top sellers. That’s no different for the Model E, and for good reason.

The Techs and Specs

  • Paddle Weight: 8.0 - 8.5 oz
  • Paddle Face Material: Super-Gritty RAW Carbon Fiber
  • Paddle Core Material: Polypropylene Honeycomb
  • Paddle Shape: Elongated
  • Core Thickness: 13 mm or 16 mm
  • Paddle Length: 16 1/2"
  • Paddle Width: 7 3/8"
  • Grip Size: Thick - 4 1/2"

Right out of the gate, the Model E has what so many players are looking for today. An elongated shape, poly honeycomb core, and what seems to be one of the most important buzz words in pickleball, a ‘gritty’ hitting surface. Combine those features with the option of either a powerful 13 mm core or a touch-friendly 16 mm core, this paddle will appeal to the masses from top to bottom.

What type of player should use the Model E?

Contrary to what some believe, we don’t feel elongated paddles are geared toward any specific player or play style. Can beginners use an elongated paddle? Yes! Can professionals use an elongated shape? Many do!

We’d recommend the Model E to almost any player. The only potential deterrent could be that it does have a larger-than-average grip size. So if you prefer a smaller grip, or have smaller hands, a smaller grip size might benefit your game more. For a player looking for enough mass to provide stability on mishits, an average-to-heavy weight and feel, and looking for a lot of spin, this is a great option. If power is more important to you than feel and control, we’d point you in the direction of the 13 mm. If you’re more of a touch and precision player, the 16 mm will likely be a better fit.

Paddle Expert’s Thoughts on the Model E

One of the best parts of being a part of this great and growing game is getting the chance to swing a lot of paddles on the market right now. And I can say with confidence that the Model E 16 mm model is often in my bag, whether it’s my gamer for the day or not.

Pros

  • Stability. The weight combined with the 16 mm core thickness offers forgiveness to those of us that don’t square the ball up every time.
  • The touch and control of the 16 mm is second to none.
  • Early on, the spin was as much as I’ve ever gotten from a paddle.
  • Good combination of maneuverability and stability.

Cons

  • As amazing as the Super Gritty surface is at the beginning, it does wear down in a reasonable amount of time, which leads to less spin. Please note, this experience is common across all gritty-surfaced paddles.
  • If you don’t like heavy paddles, you’ll want to try to get a Model E on the lighter side of their specs. 8.5 oz can be a lot to handle.

KG said: Great Paddle!

Pros: Creates a ton of spin. The reach is unmatched, covers almost every shot on the court and is great for dinking. Makes for a powerful drive, lots of "pop" off this paddle. The grip provides quite a bit of support.

Cons: None as of right now, this paddle has elevated my game.

AD said: Loved It

Pros: I used the Electrum Pro model and absolutely loved it. When I took this one out for a test, I was equally impressed. It is thicker than the Pro and comes with the same amount of pop and more reach. Very impressed!

Cons: NA
