Why Is Pickleball So Popular? 5 Reasons Why

pickleball popularity reasons

At this point, you’ve most definitely heard of pickleball. Your friends and neighbors are playing it, it has taken over the courts at your local park, and you might have even come across it flipping through tv channels on a weekend afternoon. Pickleball has taken the country by storm and is maintaining its spot as the fastest-growing sport in America. In this article, the Paddle Experts at JustPaddles break down five of the main reasons why pickleball is so popular all of a sudden and why you should give it a go if you haven't already. Let's begin.

Why Pickleball Is So Popular

Pickleball is the best of all worlds. As a combination of tennis and ping pong, tennis and badminton, or however you’d like to categorize it, the entry into the game is as easy as any sport out there. Here are five of the many reasons why pickleball has become so popular:

  • The pickleball and pickleball paddle make it easy to get a rally going, even on day one of your adventure into the new sport. Further, USA Pickleball, the governing body of pickleball, limits the power and spin allowed by the paddles, to ensure the game remains true to its core.

  • The size of the court (roughly a third of a tennis court) makes mobility less of a factor, meaning it is easier for anyone (young, old, or in between) to cover the court in just a few steps when playing doubles.

  • It’s easy to get involved! Pickleball courts are popping up everywhere and many times, are replacing unused tennis courts at local parks. Which means court options that are free to the public! Being able to get started for less than $50, with no monthly fees and public space readily available means that pickleball is an option for many.
  • Tournaments and leagues are exploding everywhere! Organized play has become easier to find and adds a fun element for players looking for competition without a ton of experience. One example of a tour that's geared for amateur players is the World Pickleball Tour. With 35+ events across all corners of the United States, the WPT has emerged as one of the most sought-after tours in pickleball, focusing 100% of its energy on amateur players and player experience.
  • Everybody’s doing it! The sport’s popularity means more invitations from friends looking for an evening of friendly competition. And with the boom of facilities that combine pickleball, food, and an adult beverage or two (like Chicken N Pickle), a night filled with pickleball has never been easier.

We talked a little bit about it, but getting into the game takes no more than a paddle per player, a ball or two, and access to a local pickleball court. Google is a great way to find local courts, mobile apps like Pickleheads help you connect with players looking for a game, and Facebook, Instagram, and other social platforms can connect you to local clubs and players to ensure you’re not the only one on the court!
