What is PBCoR and What Does PBCoR mean for Pickleball?

The introduction of PBCoR was driven by a rapid evolution in pickleball paddle technology. Manufacturers have been pushing the boundaries of paddle performance with new materials and designs. While innovation is welcome, some paddles began to prioritize power to such an extent that they overshadowed the sport’s emphasis on skill and strategy.

According to USA Pickleball, the static deflection tests previously used to evaluate paddle performance were becoming outdated. These tests measured stiffness but couldn’t fully account for the dynamic forces at play during a real game. PBCoR, inspired by similar tests used in baseball and softball, directly measures the paddle’s power by evaluating the ball’s exit speed after impact. This dynamic test provides a more accurate representation of a paddle’s performance.

What Does PBCoR Mean for Pickleball Players?

For recreational players, the new PBCoR standard may have little immediate impact, since all paddle certifications only directly impact sanctioned tournament play. However, for competitive players, the rule is more significant. If your paddle doesn’t meet the new standard, you’ll need to upgrade to a compliant model before July 1, 2025, to participate in USA Pickleball-sanctioned tournaments.

What Does PBCoR Mean for Manufacturers?

PBCoR is already reshaping the pickleball equipment industry. Major brands like JOOLA and Gearbox are responding with new paddle models designed to comply with the updated rules, ensuring that their products meet both the PBCoR standards and players’ performance expectations.

  • JOOLA announced the retirement of its popular MOD TA-15 Perseus paddle, ceasing production but allowing it to remain tournament-legal until July 2025. To support loyal customers, JOOLA is launching a Paddle Refresh Program, offering discounts on new compliant paddles.
  • Gearbox is also phasing out its PRO Power Elongated paddle and introducing a new Pro Ultimate Power 14mm model in early 2025. The company’s PBCoR Innovation Program allows customers to register eligible paddles for discounts on upgraded models.

How Will PBCoR Impact the Sport of Pickleball?

The PBCoR standard ensures a level playing field for players at all skill levels. By capping the power potential of paddles, it brings the focus back to strategy, precision, and athleticism—qualities that make pickleball such a beloved game. Additionally, the transition period, which gives players until mid-2025 to adapt, reflects a balanced approach to implementation.

Manufacturers are embracing the changes, using this opportunity to develop paddles that comply with the new rules while maintaining high performance. Players can look forward to innovative designs that uphold the integrity of the sport without sacrificing quality or playability.

PBCoR represents a pivotal moment in pickleball’s evolution. By setting measurable limits on paddle power, it preserves the spirit of the game while encouraging innovation within fair boundaries. Whether you’re a weekend warrior or a tournament pro, understanding PBCoR and upgrading your equipment as needed will keep you at the top of your game.

As the July 2025 deadline approaches, keep an eye out for the latest paddle releases from trusted brands like JOOLA, Gearbox, and more. These paddles promise to meet the PBCoR standard while continuing to push the envelope of performance and durability. After all, the heart of pickleball isn’t just in the paddle—it’s in the love of the game.
